To inform the General Relief Opportunities for Work (GROW) staff of changes to the Job Skills Preparation Class (JSPC), a job readiness/job search training activity for GROW participants.

Effective January 1, 2014, the following changes will be implemented:

  • JSPC will be known as Job Readiness Training (JRT); and

  • A new Job Readiness Training for Youth (JRY) will be offered for Transition Age Youth (TAY) participants, between 18 and 24 years old.

Background

As part of the new GROW Job Services contracts, the GROW Program will have two new curricula that will replace the current JSPC. A Job Readiness Training curriculum tailored for the new and returning participants and a Job Readiness Training for Youth curriculum for the Transition Age Youth (TAY) participants.

The new JRT and JRY curricula will provide workshops that will cover the following key areas:

  • Motivation and self-esteem building;

  • Self-sufficiency concepts;

  • Goal Setting;

  • Strategies for seeking employment;

  • Identifying and accessing resources for employment;

  • Completing a job application, both written and online;

  • Preparing a resume;

  • Interviewing techniques;

  • Effective Communication;

  • Job Retention Skills; and

  • Other life skills topics (e. g., stress management, accessing community resources, money management, personal and professional development, expunging criminal records).

The information on the new JRT providers for all the GROW sites is available in the LEADER Replacement System (LRS). JRY will be offered once per month.  Refer to the attached Job Readiness Training, Job Readiness Training for Youth and Orientation Schedule for the class schedule.

In addition, the GROW staff can continue to refer TAY participants to Pathways to Success (PTS).  PTS is a specialized job readiness training for TAY participants with barriers to employment, offered by Los Angeles County Office of Education.

Description

Job Readiness Training for Youth (JRY)

Similar to JRT, JRY is a three-week job search/job readiness activity, except that it is tailored specifically to address the TAY’s needs.

The JRY workshops will focus on teaching youth leadership, responsibility, self-confidence, dressing appropriately for employment, conflict resolution, punctuality/attendance at work, financial planning and other work readiness skills.  It will also provide an interactive group approach to allow time for youth to share motivational/inspirational stories and successes and teach skills to one another.

Requirements

Participants must complete the three weeks, 20-hour per week activity to comply with GROW.  Failure to attend or complete JRY will result in noncompliance and possible sanction being applied.
